Naig family in Cylinder

Berta og Bertel Naig`s farm in Cylinder Iowa

Two of the brothers of great-grandmother Eli Nag Fjelde settled in Iowa. Both have many descendants in the United States.

Brothers Thor and Bertel both lived near Cylinder, northwest Iowa. In 1985, Cylinder had its 100th anniversary. In this connection, a history book was published, with a presentation of Cylinder's inhabitants. The book is called "Cylinder, Iowa centennial 1885-1985" (CC). I have borrowed this from Lisa Thelin Knutsen. The pictures were taken in poor light with a mobile phone.

In this article I will present what is written about the Naig brothers and their descendants. I'll start with the oldest of the brothers. His name was Thor Naig (Nag). He was born at Nag i Strand in 1856 and died in Iowa in 1839. He was married to Karen Sigvaldsen from Rennsøy. They had six children. The eldest child died aged only 14. Thor emigrated to Iowa in 1882.

Karen and Thor had one son and four daughters who grew up. The son Sig (Sigvald) was not married. In CC we find the daughter Sadie Naig, who was married to Theodor Meling. Sadie and Theodor's son, Duane, is also introduced in the book.

The youngest daughter of Karen and Thor Naig was called Mavis and was married to Emil Mansager:

Bertel Naig was the youngest of the brothers of great-grandmother Eli who settled in Cylinder. He was married to Berta Tow who died in 1928. He married a second time to Josefine (Jossie) Handeland Peterson two years later. Bertel was 21 years old when he went to America in 1889. He had 11 children in his first marriage and 4 in his second. In CC he and his second wife Jossie are mentioned. In addition, more children and grandchildren from the first marriage.

Bertel and Berta's second child was named Theodore:

Theodore and Elsie's daughter, Joann , are featured in CC:

Elmer was Berta and Bertel's third child. We find his son Richard mentioned in CC:

Tom Naig was the sixth child of Berta and Bertel Naig. Tom is mentioned in CC and we also find Tom's grandchildren Arnold and Marlene:

Number seven of the children of Berta and Bertel Naig was called Berger Naig. We find mention of Berger's son Obed in CC:

Number ten of the eleven children of Berta and Bertel Naig was called Torger. He and his three children Teresa, Terry and Tim are featured in CC. Terry's son Mike Naig is featured in a previous article on my genealogy blog:

Teresa Naig and Paul Saxton and their three sons.

I also include a photo of the book Cylinder Centennial 1885-1985:
